Abi Martin delivered a dazzling display on the floor to help Team England bank a battling bronze medal in the women’s gymnastics team event.
With the scores locked tantalising close in a nerve-jangling final, the world bronze medallist held her nerve in front of a raucous Glasgow crowd to help England’s women follow up the men’s team silver 24 hours earlier.
Martin combined with Ruby Stacey, Shannah-Kae Grant, Alia Leat and Shantae-Eve Amankwaah to narrowly pip Wales to the podium as Australia and Canada claimed gold and silver.
The English contingent were left relying on Martin, 18, to produce a performance to clinch their place amongst the medals and the Devon star did not disappoint with a brilliant score of 13.250.
“I’m so happy and I definitely enjoyed that,” she said.
“I knew that I had to go out there and give it my best for the whole team, and luckily I really did that tonight.
“It may not have been my highest score ever, but it was definitely the best performance and it really helped the team.
“I could really hear them and the whole crowd as well – when I finished my routine, I didn’t know if we’d done it but I knew I’d done the best I could.
“I could hear the crowd screaming and that, along with my song, gave me all the adrenaline that I needed.”
Stacey added: “I don’t really know if we knew what score Abi had to get exactly – we knew it was going to be tight but to be honest, we don’t even know our final scores now.
“I don’t really know but we’re all really happy.”
