Heartbreak fuelled Tess Howard's comeback that ended with her standing on the top of the podium at Birmingham 2022.

Howard missed out on the Tokyo Olympic Games through injury having initially been selected in the Team GB squad.

Her return from injury could not have gone much better as Team England soared to hockey gold in Birmingham.

The 24-year-old, who took up hockey due to the lack of options to play rugby, marched through England age-groups and won bronze at the 2017 European Junior Championships.

The forward would have been a key part of the team that went on to win bronze in Tokyo were it not for rupturing her ACL in the build-up and she returned to the England ranks for the 2022 FIH Pro League season.

Howard has a degree in geography from Durham University and is currently reading Politics at the London School of Economics, combining that with a campaign to make kit more accessible.

It was ecstasy for the women’s team who took home the title for the first time in history.
