Sam Atkin had a breakthrough year in 2020 and transformed his fortunes from athletics circuit pacemaker to the fourth quickest UK male over 10,000m.  

That form saw him earn a spot on Team GB’s Olympic squad but his maiden major tournament was cruelly cut short by injury. 

The Lincolnshire long-distance runner was a talented footballer and tennis player in his youth before concentrating on athletics full-time. 

After failing to complete the 10,000m final at Birmingham 2022, he bounced back to set the national 3,000m record in Boston with a time of 7:31.97.
