Since losing his sight approximately 30 years ago, bowls has been a huge part of Ron Homer’s life.

"When I lost my sight in the mid-90s, I lost my driver's license and couldn't drive and couldn't work, and your whole world collapses,” he recalled. "Then you get allocated to a social worker.

"She came up and saw me with a few leaflets and said that there was a visually impaired bowls club in Yeovil. I knew nothing about bowls or anything to do with it. I plucked up the courage in the end and went up and joined and got the bug for it."

Homer’s career has seen him represent England internationally in disability bowls, including at multiple International Blind Bowls Association World Championships. In 2015 in New Zealand,

Homer and partner Keith Cook won a gold medal, becoming world champions in the B2 section.

He also secured a bronze medal at the 2017 and 2023 World Blind Bowls Championships. Away from competition, he served until recently as Treasurer of the Yeovil Visually Impaired Bowls Club.

He was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2026 New Year Honours for services to visually impaired bowls.

Bowls and Para Bowls
It was a hugely successful campaign at Leamington Spa’s Victoria Park and some thrilling games saw Team England leave the plush lawn with six medals including two gold, two silver and two bronze.
