Squash requires ultimate dexterity and flexibility, which betrays Lucy Turmel’s sporting background as a gymnast.

The Suffolk star picked up a squash racket at the age of nine and that soon became her passion.

One of a growing general of young female English players breaking into the top echelons of the world rankings, Turmel first cracked the world top 25 in 2019.

The youngster approaches her Commonwealth Games debut brimming with confidence having won gold at April’s European Team Championships.

At the event, Turmel’s play was singled out for sparkling praise by Mohamed El Shorbagy, one of the best men’s players in the world.

The stand-out story from the glass courts at the University of Birmingham was undoubtedly that of Gina Kennedy who, on her Games debut, became the first English woman to win the Women’s Singles title.
