Commonwealth Appearances

Helen Wood is set to make her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow, having been a fixture of the game in Yorkshire for more than three decades.

Having previously represented Great Britain at wheelchair basketball, she was not sure about bowls when she first came across the sport back in 1994.

But while Wood was concerned about the slow pace compared to the physical nature of basketball, as well the likes of hockey and netball which she played as a youngster, she was instantly hooked when she tried her hand.

In the years since, she has become a trailblazer on the bowls scene, and with a drive to prove that bowls can be an inclusive sport, she made history as the first wheelchair player to reach EIBA national finals back in 2009.

She has not looked back and will now tick off another achievement in her bowls career when she makes her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow.

Bowls and Para Bowls
It was a hugely successful campaign at Leamington Spa’s Victoria Park and some thrilling games saw Team England leave the plush lawn with six medals including two gold, two silver and two bronze.
