Boxer Ellis Trowbridge is a true showman in the ring, and he ensured he will return to the Glasgow 2026 stage with victory in the men’s 55kg round of 16.

‘Royal T’ battled past Rukmal Prasanna of Sri Lanka with a 4-0 win on points to set up a quarter-final contest with Ghana’s Amadu Mohammed.

Mohammed earned his place with a first-round stoppage of Kiribati’s Eriu Temakau but Trowbridge is not fazed by the challenge that awaits him.

“Expect fireworks,” he said. “You saw what my opponent just did there, he stopped his guy. I am going to face him on Tuesday and I am going to be ready.

“I have got power myself and I won’t shy away from a challenge.”

Trowbridge was pushed all the way by Prasanna but won all three rounds and showed his skill in controlling the fight.

“I listened to the instructions from my corner and showed my superior ability and it got me through today,” he added.

There was plenty of English support at the SEC Centre, who also got behind Lauren Mackie.

Mackie beat Australia’s Monique Suraci in a split 3-2 decision, as the Desborough boxer convincingly won a crucial third round.

The pair were level pegging after the first two rounds but Mackie was able to safely navigate the decider to progress to the last eight of the women’s 54kg.

“I’m really happy with that,” she said. “I knew she is a really good girl, I have seen her on the circuit, so I knew it was going to be a tough fight.

“The last round was all down to the scorecards. It was split the first two [rounds] so it was all about tactics and planning that last round, executing the plan from the coaches.

“Keep it long, keep it my range, make sure she can’t squish the space and make sure she can’t outwork me in the middle and that’s what we did.”

A notable feature of all English fights has been the presence of the rest of the Team England fighters in the crowd.

Mackie revealed how close the squad has become and the role they all play in pushing each other on.

She added: “The England squad have been great. We are a really strong team together, inside and out of the ring.

“We are all supporting each other and it pushes us on. These fights aren’t easy and when it comes to that last round, you just want to do them proud.

“It is really important having their support.”
