Nick Brett and Jamie Walker maintained their unbeaten record in the men's pairs bowls, with a dominant tie break performance against Epii Pola and Jason Lindsay of the Cook Islands.

The English pair sit top of Section B after three matches, joint on wins with India but above them on sets won.

After narrowly taking the first set 5-4 against Pola and Lindsay, the roles were reversed in the second, as Brett and Walker fell to a 4-3 defeat.

But they came out firing to take the tie break 3-0 and head into their final group matches against Namibia and India as the team to beat.

“We knew coming in that this format is short," said Brett. "You're not going to play brilliantly every game, and we played some good stuff, but not where we want to be. It gave them a chance and they duly took it. 

“In the tie-break, we stepped up and found a couple of good ones and just got over the line. We're happy for a win and we'll move on to tomorrow.”

Walker added: "A win's a win in this group phase. In any phase of this competition, but in this format just getting over the line is good.

“Obviously, we can reflect on strategy and stuff later on, but we’re just happy to get the win." 

Katherine Rednall suffered her first defeat of the women’s singles after losing a tie break against Canada’s Kelly McKerihen.

Rednall won the first set 6-5 before being beaten 8-5 in the second and edged out in the decider but is still in a good position to qualify from Section A after three matches.

“It was a scrappy first set which I managed to get through. Neither Kelly or I settled in the first set,” Rednall said.

“Second set was tighter for head, both played better, but Kelly came out on top with a couple of really big bowls and a couple of runners. I'm pleased to get it to a tie-break.

“Now that throws the group wide open, I'm pleased to get a set off her. I'll just push forward now, try to get wins and good shot difference in sets.”

In the para women's pairs B6-B8, Michelle White and Helen Wood lost 2-0 to Malaysia, but White was heartened by the performance. 

"It was a disappointing result, but not a disappointing game," she said. 

"We both played really well. They were playing T to T, and we were nailing that with them. They were just getting one bowl nearer than us every time. I think the pair of us played so much better tonight.

"I'm not disheartened by it. We've played our best and the bowls just didn't go our way."

In the para men’s pairs B6-B8, Joe Peplow and Kieran Rollings were beaten 2-0 by the South African duo of Gareth Rees-Gibbs and Jarid James to sit fifth in Section A after three matches.

Peplow said: “Obviously it didn't go quite as we wanted it to, but we'll come back tomorrow and try our best.”
