Shanice Beckford-Norton rued the fine margins that got away from Team England as they slipped to a dramatic defeat against Jamaica in the women’s 3x3 basketball play-in game.

Beckford-Norton was part of the squad which won silver in Birmingham four years ago but their chances of another medal were dashed as Teneisia Brown kept her cool to land a free throw in the dying seconds.

England had made a fine comeback from 18-15 down with less than a minute remaining, with Beckford-Norton taking her personal tally for the match to nine, but Jamaica ultimately came out on top.

“It’s tough playing a 10 minute game at 8pm as you’re waiting all day to play,” she said.

“We put ourselves in a difficult position at the start of the game as they played in a way we didn’t anticipate so props to them. 

“We didn’t expect them to shoot the way they did. So we had to do things a little bit outside of our game plan and we had to claw back into it, which we did.

“It came down to all the little things at the end of the game. We had to win all of them to win the game and we didn’t.”

Georgia Gayle contributed six points to England’s tally, with Cheridene Green chipping in with five.

Beckford-Norton was also left to rue the group stage defeat against New Zealand, which denied them progress straight through to the semi-finals.

“We know what we did well and what we didn’t do well,” Beckford-Norton added.

“It’s simple and it came down to the little things in every game. If we had done them against New Zealand, we might have had a day off and wouldn’t be here.”

Beckford-Norton and her teammates will now throw their weight behind their fellow basketballers, who are in semi-final action on Wednesday.

The men are first up, facing New Zealand at noon. The wheelchair men’s team then take on Canada at 1pm, before the wheelchair women’s team play the same opposition 90 minutes later.

“It’s just a matter of what can we do now to support Team England for the rest of the tournament,” Beckford-Norton said.

“When we get the next chance to put on this jersey and represent our country then we know exactly what we need to say and do.”
